Gold or AU is a soft gold coloured metal with the atomic number of 79 – a pure representation of this design concept – pure gold AU79.

Previously a 1950s automotive garage it needed a serious transformation to revive the space from a greasy workshop into a stunning café, coffee roaster, and event space. Today the 600 square metre workshop has been transformed into a sprawling indoor botanical-themed café, overflowing with lush plantings, natural earthy tones, and character hints to pay homage to its past life.

Old tyre marks have been preserved in brass as part of the building’s reincarnation as a sleek, new coffee house. As with all structures and re-fits, it’s all about the bones. The space has become a functional dream. The waiter station with its bold aqua finish and castors mimics that of a mechanics trolley, complementing the historic story of the entire building while remaining highly practical.

The stylish and practical cabinetry allows the space to flow without being intrusive or looking out of place. In the open aspect of the design, it was imperative everything followed the overall streamlined effect of the surrounding areas. Floating shelves add to this appeal, as too, the carefully crafted arched coffee display that happily takes centre stage.

Providing a huge amount of functional detail the aqua 2-pac cabinetry cleverly disguises the electrical switchboard, communication services and CCTV. Illustrating expert craftsmanship and attention to detail. Highlighting quality joinery that complements stunning architecture.

The arched coffee display unit with a sleek terrazzo countertop with a 4.5mm clear Perspex was carefully rebated into the underside of the terrazzo and fixed to the front of the drawers. Allowing products to be easily displayed and highlighted.

The black brick building not only encompasses the incredible smells from the delicacies on offer, and the home-roasted coffee brewing, but it also envelopes everything that great design and flawless joinery can provide. The polished concrete flooring adds to the natural tones in the room, while neutral colours allow the space to shine with the important accents of gold that are sprinkled around the cafe.

The space is light, bright, and beautiful. Bringing the natural life of the outdoors, inside, while offering contrasting textures and materials that easily delight the eye.
